KTA's Long Journey

by Elise Soucie

The air was buzzing with excitement. Everyone from pre-school to twelfth grade as well as the teachers  were excited because the day was finally here! Kankakee Trinity Academy was founded in 1981 and now, 31 years later, the entire school was all together under one roof. This time, they were under a roof they could call their own.
KTA has had a long journey to arrive at this important milestone. It started out as a small school meeting in the Open Bible and Immanuel Baptist Churches. Since it was started it grew and moved around, but the goal was always looming. Kankakee Trinity Academy needed a building of its own.  The churches the school was in were very kind and accommodating, but an actual school building was needed. Bethany Seyden remarked, “I hated climbing three flights of stairs to get to my classroom!” Finally, after years of waiting, an opportunity arose.  The St. Paul’s old school building was vacated and it seemed the perfect place for Trinity to gather together under one roof. God truly blessed the school in what he gave them.
This journey was not over yet though. The building needed a lot of work and it took the combined efforts of teachers, supporters, and families to make the building into a proper school once again, a school that included a gym. This was the cause of much excitement in the high school and elementary alike. A gym of their own would provide more P.E. time and a constructive place for children to play all through the winter. Many contributed a lot of time and resources to the project and their help is very much appreciated.
When the day finally arrived to walk into our very own school for the first time, everyone was all smiles. It was so nice to come back from Christmas break to a completed new school. All the classrooms look wonderful and it truly will be a great learning environment. Sandy Marcutaitis, a teacher at KTA echoed everyones' thoughts when she said, “It is so nice for us to all be together! I love having my very own classroom to decorate and teach in. I feel so very, very blessed!” The school also provides an opportunity for the high school students to mentor the elementary. Older children can be spotted in the hallways giving passing elementary kids hugs and high-fives! Fifth grader Clayton Kime said, “I like being in the new school because I can see my brother Travis. Also, all the other highschoolers are really nice too!” The whole school is still brimming with joy. It will take a little while to adjust to the new schedule and new classrooms but there is no doubt about the fact that everyone is joyous to be at the new school. When classes are asked if they are happy to be here, the unanimous response is “YES!”
